When Johnny’s elderly friend suffers a stroke, Johnny takes on the responsibility of caring for Mr. Thornton’s dog. In the course of caring for the dog, Johnny finds that the dog is a great hunter. Johnny tells Mr. Thornton about all of the adventures that Johnny and the dog go on, when he visits him at the hospital. Mr. Thornton realizes that the quality of Trouble’s life has become greatly enhanced since Johnny has started to care for him. Trouble becomes very fond of Johnny even though he misses his owner. Every time Johnny has to leave Trouble for the night, Trouble whimpers and Johnny feels terrible that he has to leave him all alone, because he knows that the dog is lonely. Mr. Thornton is sent to a care home and realizes that he may never get to return to his own home, or Trouble again. Mr. Thornton knows that Johnny is the best person for his beloved dog. But the problem is that Johnny and his mother live in a cabin at the lodge, and it is highly unlikely that the owner of the lodge will allow a dog to be kept on the premises. Mr. Thornton devises a plan to make sure that Johnny can have the dog, but he is unsure that it will work.
